France to Make Ex-pats Lose Free Healthcare
British ex-pats in France will be unable to get free healthcare under new French reforms.
The plans will not allow those under sixty-five not working to receive free healthcare as from the 30th March 2008. The British Government is trying to stop the changes but recommend those in France who retired early to take out private healthcare.
Many ex-pats will not have expected to pay for private healthcare but this could be cheaper for them if they were to become ill or have an accident when treatment could cost thousands of euros.
The Minister for Europe travelled to Paris to lobby the French Government but it is not considered likely they will do a U-turn.
Ex-pats are advised to keep a watch on healthcare developments in the country they have chosen to live, so that any new laws do not catch them out.
